Human Food That’s Safe for Dogs

By Lisa Schreiner, #GoGetItLIFE Contributing Writer

After reading about recalls and dog foods that cause many ailments in our fur babies, I’ve decided to minimize the amount of dog food I give my pooch, Dexter.  Dex has never really been a fan of the canned/wet dog food (who can blame him, that stuff smells and looks disgusting), so I decided to incorporate some healthy, dog-safe human foods into his dry food. And with his birthday coming up on Halloween, I’ve even found a dog-friendly birthday cake that I can enjoy with him!  Below, you’ll find a list of foods that you can use as treats and use to incorporate into their dry food, as well as the recipe for a sweet treat for your pup.  Of course, as with anything, moderation is key.

Dog-safe human foods

  • Sweet potatoes
  • Peanut Butter (please check the ingredients as Xylitol is toxic to dogs and is found in some peanut butter brands)
  • Cooked chicken (boneless, skinless)
  • Carrots
  • Cottage Cheese
  • Strawberries
  • Cantaloupe
  • Melon
  • Plain Yogurt
  • Salmon
  • Blueberries
  • Eggs
  • Apples
  • Pumpkin
  • Bananas
  • Green Beans
  • Watermelon
  • Edamame (out of the pod)
  • Cheerios
  • Brown rice

Dog-friendly cake

1 cup flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 cup shredded carrots
1 tsp vanilla
1/3 cup honey
1 egg

Mix the flour and baking soda together then add the remaining ingredients. I simply combined them using a wooden spoon…no mixer necessary.  Pour into a greased 8″ round cake pan and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.  Cool and spread peanut butter on the top for icing (whipped peanut butter works best for spreading, and it’s a little healthier too).
